All about John Smith

My name is John Smith and I am the Head Teacher at Smith Mathematics Coaching.
At SMC, I have taught Mathematics, providing encouragement and motivation, and showing
Study Techniques to students for 20 years.
Experience
I have been tutoring, coaching and teaching Mathematics for 40 years and have helped
thousands of students, from Year 5 to Year 12 HSC (Higher School Certificate). I
spent 25 years as Head of Mathematics at Moriah College in Bondi Junction.
I resigned to continue to build Smith Mathematics Coaching.
Qualifications
I have a degree in Mathematics and Mathematical Statistics as well as tertiary studies
in Philosophy and the History and Philosophy of Science. I am interested in my students'
progress as individuals: they are not just members of a class. And I spend a lot
of time with parents, discussing schools, tuition, teaching and learning issues.
Published Books
I wrote my first book, How to Study Effectively in 1984. I published it with Jim
Coroneos who, at that time, was the top author of mathematics texts in NSW. Since
then I have published nine other books – all directed to examination success.
They are used by teachers and students throughout Australia and are available at
any good bookshop.
My Teaching Technique
Progress in Mathematics occurs when students understand the basics of each topic.
But this understanding can be achieved in many ways. My way works on sound teaching
+ revision + revision + more revision until I am satisfied that all students in
the class have mastered the problem.
This may take time – but it is time that must be spent.
